When I read it what I thought of was how in some cases we all work in smaller networkers with in the entire society of things. And of course each network has to have that common ground which would be symbolized by the "center". However in order to work as an entire society there has to be some sort of interaction with the smaller networks. This interaction would mean that each center or circle that is created around the center is imcomplete. See have the notion that each of the networks are complete in their own respects. Derrida argues that in fact they are incomplete because they need other networks in order to have the image of complete. Thus they can only identify themselves in separation, but still relation to another. This is the idea of freeplay in which the networks fluidly interact using ideals from other networks. But this also causes the centers to shift. Therefore networking and subsects of society are not stagnant unrelating sections but intermingling forces.

Hey Cara,
I'm doing the blog portfolio and I can't seem to find one of my comments for Althusser. So rather than keep looking, I'm just going to make a new one, seems easier.

You must really not have liked Watchmen to be welcoming back the theorists. I'll take the comic book any day compared to this stuff. With regards to the 'base' discussion, I would relate to how people saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you don't start off right, then the rest of the day is going to suck. What I think Althusser is going for here is that the while the base is important to the edifice, it is not the only part, "there is a ‘relative autonomy’ of the superstructure with respect to the base"

Baudrillard was hard...very very hard. I was pretty unsure about a lot of things being addressed. I am unsure about wikapedia...I have heard terrible things about that website. What I do when I get losted, I go look at other peoples blogs...but a lot of us write the same stuff like "well I din't get this..." His whole idea of "real" was a mess to me. I thought he spent to much time questioning real...and it got me confused. I started to wonder if I was actually real and pinched myself...

Hi Cara,

I agree with you I don't think these men enjoyed movies very much, or any form of media for that matter. Unfortunately, I find myself also agreeing with SOME of the things they say. As for the loss of self or identity when working for a company, what I think they are saying is that because our society forces us to work in order to survive everyone becomes an employee. Thus, everyone faces of a loss of who they really are and need to conform to the role of an employee and work their way up to look good in society. So going back to the quote, this makes people working for a company just another person "an illusion" as they would say, basically making the job an act of just going through the motions and being what a company needs and wants one to be. Money is everything to people now a days so maybe what their trying to say is that working to move up in society is what becomes most important and what causes people to lose who they really are and gain this new persona?? Just a thought! :)

Cara,

The definition you provided kind of cleared things up for me a bit. I could be wrong (most likely) but I’m going to try and bounce an idea off of what you said. Michael Jordan- greatest basketball player in the world, most respected, accepted by all races, why? White people get the impression that they are actually intermingling with black people. They perceive a comfortableness that doesn’t actually exist because they get it from watching TV. The hyper reality in this case would be a homogeneous culture of the white and black populations. The value received is that ‘lack’ of racism. It is an intrinsic value- a felling that one is doing their part to create a utopian society by interacting with other racial persona(s) through the media. This comment is more than open to criticism.

I agree with you, this one wasn't the easiest of reads. I thought he was overly critical of somethings, but I guess that's his job. I also found myself looking up definitions of somethings as I read through this so you're not alone.

Hey Cara,
I really agree with a lot of what you had to say here. I definitely agree, Horkeimer and Adorno definitely didn't like movies. I think they felt as though it just brainwashes people. I know for me, I watch a movie as a source of entertainment, a way to unwind. I don't watch a movie and take it so seriously where it deeply impacts my life. I also really agree where you said "It’s all basically for either educational or entertainment purposes, so why bash it?" That is definitely true- movies are here to keep us entertained, not to mess with our minds.

hey Cara, wooo our carnival is done. Trust me, I know how you feel about the major work load-my brian seems to be fried too haha. The first thing I caught interesting about your blog was the first section where you focused on the idea of a filter. I think this filter can relate back to Foucault and Butler. I think this filter is basically the exact idea of censorship on society and explains the set of guidelines that you talked about which is a great connection. With the second part of your blog that comes from p. 1236, I wish I could help you out more. There were sections in the reading that I had hightlighted with question marks next to them, and of course that was one of the ones I had, shucks :(

Hey Cara,

At the top of your screen click Dashboard. When the menu pops up, click on Options. On the general page that automatically comes up, scroll down to the "Time and Date" section. If you type -5 in the first box, as in five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time, and hit save you should be all set.
